Earthen Vessels Filled With Light

ਕਾਚੇ ਭਾਡੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

He creates and adorns the earthen vessels; He infuses His Light within them.

As is the destiny pre-ordained by the Creator, so are the deeds we do. ||2||

In plain words

The Maker shapes the clay pots and makes them beautiful, and places a Light inside them.

As the Creator wrote from the very start, so are the deeds we do.

You are humble clay and shining Light at the same time — both are true.
The deeper layer

We are like clay pots, plain on the outside, with a divine Light glowing inside.

Kaachay bhaaday are soft clay pots that have not been baked yet. They are humble and easy to break. Yet the One shapes them and honors them. Antar jot samaa-ee — and places the Light within. Jot means the divine Light.

Picture a clay lantern with a candle inside. From the outside it is just earth. At night, it glows.

Jaisaa likhat likhi-aa Dhur kartai — as the Creator wrote from the very beginning. Ham taisee kirat kamaa-ee — so we live out our kirat, our deeds. The pot is plain clay and shining Light at the same time. That holds two things together: we can be humble, and we have great worth.

A Question to Sit With

What is something ordinary about you that also feels a little bit like a gift?
