In plain words

Blessed, blessed is the singer who sings praises like this.

They sing the praises of the One,

and let go of the tangles and chasing of Maya, the world's pull.

Singing what's true loosens the grip of chasing what isn't.
The deeper layer

How wonderful is the one who sings praise like this.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

Bhalo bhalo ray keeratnee-aa means "blessed, blessed is the singer of praise." A keeratnee-aa is someone who sings kirtan, songs in praise of the One.

Chhod maa-i-aa kay dhandh su-aa-o means "setting down the tangles and chasing of Maya." Maya is the pull of the world: always wanting more things, more attention, more stuff.

Think of the feeling when you finally put down a heavy school bag. Singing praise works like that. It is not a chore. It is a way of setting things down and feeling free.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you chase that doesn't make you happy?
