Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When someone becomes pleasing to their Master,
that one person in millions sings the One's praise like this.
I lean on the Sangat, the holy people gathered together.
Nanak says: there the praise of the One is sung.
This kind of singing is rare and precious, and it is found in the Sangat.
Kot madh ayhu keertan gaavai means "out of millions, one sings praise like this." That is not meant to shut anyone out. It is like saying a true friend is one in a million. It shows how precious it is.
Saadhsangat kee jaava-o tayk means "I take the support of the Saadh Sangat." The Saadh Sangat, the Sangat, is people gathered together to remember the One.
Think of learning to swim. It is much easier when you are in the pool with others who are learning too. Guru Nanak's name, used by every Guru, closes the verse: kaho Naanak tis keertan ayk, "that is where the praise of the One is sung."
Who are the people who bring out the best song in you?
