In plain words

Some people call the One "Raam," and some call the One "Khuda."

Some serve the One as "Gusain," others as "Allah."

Different names can all point to the same One.
The deeper layer

People call the One by many names, and all of them reach for the same One.

Ko-ee bolai raam raam ko-ee khudaa-ay — some say "Raam, Raam," and some say "Khudaa-ay." Ko-ee sayvai gus-ee-aa ko-ee alaahi — some serve the One as Gusain, others as Allah. Raam and Gusain are names used by Hindus. Khuda and Allah are names used by Muslims.

Guru Arjan sets these names side by side with respect. They all point to Ik Onkar, the One Creator. Think of a grandmother. One grandchild calls her Nani, another Grandma, another Bebe. She is the same person, and she loves them all. The names differ. The One they reach for is the same.

A Question to Sit With

What are some different names you've heard people use for the divine?
