In plain words

Pain is the doorway, and anger stands guard. Hope and worry are the two shutters.

Maya, the pull of endless wanting, is the water in the moat, and in the middle of that moat a home is built. There, on the seat of Truth, the First One sits, calm and steady.

Even inside the walls worry builds, the One sits calmly at the center.
The deeper layer

A worried heart builds a fortress around itself, and the One sits calmly in the middle of it.

He builds the castle out of feelings. Dukh darvaajaa — pain is the gate. Rohu rakhvaalaa — anger is the guard. Aasaa andaysaa du-ay pat — hope and worry are the two doors that swing open and shut. Maa-i-aa jal khaa-ee — maa-i-aa, the pull of wanting more things, is the water in the moat all around.

It is a picture of a heart on guard. Think of a kid who has been hurt, building a pillow fort and yelling "Keep out!" The walls feel safe, but they also keep love out.

Then comes the turn. Sat kai aasan purakh rahai — right in the middle, on a seat of Truth, the One is present, calm and steady. Even inside the fort, we are never alone.

A Question to Sit With

What walls do you put up when you are anxious?
