The Harp You're Too Dazed to Hear

ਕਿੰਕੁਰੀ ਅਨੂਪ ਵਾਜੈ ॥
kinkuree anoop vaajai.
The celestial harp plays the incomparable melody,
ਜੋਗੀਆ ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jogee-aa matvaaro ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
but in your intoxication, you do not hear it, O Yogi. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

A heavenly harp is playing a melody like no other.

But you are dazed, O yogi, and you do not hear it.

A matchless music is playing; wake up and hear it.
The deeper layer

There is beautiful music always playing inside us, but we miss it when we're distracted.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the song. Kinkuree anoop vaajai means an amazing harp is playing a melody like no other. It is the anhad, the "unstruck" music that plays without any instrument. It is always sounding.

Jogee-aa matvaaro ray means "yogi, you are dazed." Matvaaro is someone lost in a kind of daze, too distracted to hear. This is not a scolding. It is a description of how we get, sometimes. Think of a bird singing outside your window while you stare at a screen. The song was always there. You just didn't hear it.

A Question to Sit With

What do you notice only when you finally slow down and get quiet?
