He alone is Gorakh, who sustains the earth; He created it in an instant. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Baba, Gorakh, the Master of the world, is always awake.

The only Gorakh is the One who holds up the whole earth, the Maker who brought it into being in a single moment.

The One who is always awake is the Maker who holds up the whole earth.
The deeper layer

The One who is always awake, and never sleeps, is the Creator of the earth.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. The Nath yogis honor Gorakhnath as their great teacher. The name gorakh can also mean "protector of the earth."

Guru Nanak gives that name its fullest meaning. Gorakh so jin go-ay uthaalee — Gorakh is the One who holds up the earth. Kartay baar na laagai — and the One made it in no time at all.

It is like thanking a good coach, and then remembering who made the whole game possible. The yogis' love for their teacher is honored. Then it is pointed on to the One, who is always awake and always watching over us.

A Question to Sit With

What holds everything up and never seems to grow tired?
