The Blessings We Forget

ਪਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਵਣਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਏ ॥
paanee paraan pavan banDh raakhay chand sooraj mukh dee-ay.
Binding together water and air, He infused the breath of life into the body, and made the lamps of the sun and the moon.
ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਉ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀਨੀ ਏਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੨॥
maran jeevan ka-o Dhartee deenee aytay gun visray. ||2||
To die and to live, He gave us the earth, but we have forgotten these blessings. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One wove water and air together and breathed life into us, then hung the sun and the moon like two lamps in the sky.

The One gave us this whole earth to live on and to die on, and still we forget gifts this enormous.

The biggest gifts are the ones we forget to notice.
The deeper layer

We are surrounded by huge gifts, and we forget to say thank you.

The verse lists them one by one. Paanee paraan pavan — water, breath and air, bound together into a living body. Chand sooraj — the sun and the moon, hung up like two lamps. Dhartee — the earth, the ground where we live our lives and one day leave them.

Then comes a gentle sting: aytay gun visray, we have forgotten so many blessings. It is like having WiFi all day and only noticing it when it drops. The verse is not scolding us. It is calling us to be grateful.

A Question to Sit With

What everyday gift do you almost never stop to thank?
