ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਜਮੁ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Remembering the Lord in meditation, the Messenger of Death will not touch you. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Sing the praises of the Naam of the One, my friend. Remembering the One, your honor is kept.
Remembering the One, death has nothing to say to you.
Keeping the One in mind keeps your dignity whole and your fear small.
Remembering keeps your honor, laaj rahai, and takes away fear. Jam, the messenger of death, kachh na kahai, has nothing to say to one who remembers. It is a promise, not a threat.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad.
