A Face That Shines

bin har sagal niraarath kaam.
Without the Lord, all pursuits are useless.
su-inaa rupaa maatee daam.
Gold, silver and wealth are just dust.
gur kaa sabad jaap man sukhaa.
Chanting the Word of the Guru's Shabad, your mind shall be at peace.
eehaa oohaa tayro oojal mukhaa. ||2||
Here and hereafter, your face shall be radiant and bright. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the One, all the running around comes to nothing.

Gold, silver and money are only dust.

Repeat the Guru's Word, and your mind settles into peace.

Here and in the world beyond, your face shines clear and bright.

A clear heart gives you a face with nothing to hide.
The deeper layer

Oojal mukhaa — a bright, radiant face — is Gurbani's picture of a clear conscience: nothing to hide, eehaa oohaa (here and hereafter). Gold and silver are demoted to maatee daam, dust-money, beside a settled heart.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel that “bright, nothing-to-hide” kind of clear inside?
