The Task That Can Be Finished

kar kar thaakay vaday vadayray.
Even the greatest of the great worked and worked until they were exhausted.
kin hee na kee-ay kaaj maa-i-aa pooray.
None of them ever accomplished the tasks of Maya.
har har naam japai jan ko-ay.
Any humble being who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,
taa kee aasaa pooran ho-ay. ||3||
will have all his hopes fulfilled. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even the greatest of the great worked and worked until they were worn out.

Not one of them ever finished the work of getting and having.

Anyone at all, however humble, who repeats the Naam of the One

finds every hope fulfilled.

Chasing “more” never finishes; turning the heart can.
The deeper layer

Kar kar thaakay vaday vadayray — the great ones exhausted themselves and still never completed Maya's task, because it has no end. The one task that can be finished is the turning of the heart, open to ko-ay, anyone at all.

A Question to Sit With

What is a goal that can be finished, and what is one that never ends?
