raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
kar sanjog banaa-ee kaachh.
Joining the elements together, the robe of the body is fashioned.
tis sang rahi-o i-aanaa raach.
The ignorant fool is engrossed in it.
partipaarai nit saar samaarai.
He cherishes it, and constantly takes care of it.
ant kee baar ooth siDhaarai. ||1||
But at the very last moment, he must arise and depart. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The pieces of the world are joined together and sewn into this body, like a robe.
The foolish one gets all wrapped up in it.
We feed it and care for it every single day.
And at the very last moment, we must get up and go.
The body is a robe to care for — not the whole of who you are.
Kar sanjog banaa-ee kaachh: the body is a kaachh, a stitched garment of joined elements. Hold it rightly: cared for, never despised, yet not mistaken for the whole self.
A Question to Sit With
What part of you do you think stays “you” even as your body changes?
