Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 42
Verse 4 of 5

When The Veil Lifts

bin har naam na tootas patal.
Without the Lord's Name, the screen is not torn away.
soDhay saastar simrit sagal.
I have studied all the Shaastras and Simritees.
so naam japai jis aap japaa-ay.
He alone chants the Naam, whom the Lord Himself inspires to chant.
sagal falaa say sookh samaa-ay. ||3||
He obtains all fruits and rewards, and merges in peace. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Naam of the One, the curtain is not torn away.

I have studied all the holy books.

Only the one the One inspires repeats the Naam.

That one receives every good fruit and melts into peace.

Study opens the mind; grace lifts the veil.
The deeper layer

Patal (the screen/veil) is torn only by har naam, not by mastering saastar simrit (the scriptures). So naam japai jis aap japaa-ay — the Name lands where the One awakens it: grace, again, as the mover.

A Question to Sit With

Has learning a fact ever been different from understanding it deep down?
