Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 44
Verse 4 of 5

Even-Eyed And Steady

ਸਗਲ ਸੂਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਅਰੋਗ ॥
sagal sookh aanand arog.
He is totally peaceful, blissful and healthy;
ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਿਰਜੋਗ ॥
samadrasee pooran nirjog.
he looks upon all impartially, and is perfectly detached.
ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਡੋਲੈ ਕਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
aa-ay na jaa-ay dolai kat naahee.
He does not come and go, and he never wavers;
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੩॥
jaa kai naam basai man maahee. ||3||
the Naam abides in his mind. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

That one is at peace, glad and healthy.

That one looks on everyone the same, holding on to nothing.

That one does not come and go, and never wavers:

the one in whose mind the Naam lives.

An even eye, seeing everyone the same, is what fairness looks like.
The deeper layer

Samadrasee — the even eye that looks on all alike — is Gurbani's picture of true fairness: no favorites, no outcasts. It flows straight from Ik Onkar: if there is one reality in all, hierarchy is a confusion.

A Question to Sit With

Is there someone you tend to look down on or up to? What if you saw them level?
