Coming With Empty Hands

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਿਛਹੂ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਕੀਓ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
kichhahoo kaaj na kee-o jaan.
I have not tried to do anything through knowledge.
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ॥
surat mat naahee kichh gi-aan.
I have no knowledge, intelligence or spiritual wisdom.
ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਸੀਲ ਨਹੀ ਧਰਮ ॥
jaap taap seel nahee Dharam.
I have not practiced chanting, deep meditation, humility or righteousness.
ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ਕੈਸਾ ਕਰਮ ॥੧॥
kichhoo na jaan-o kaisaa karam. ||1||
I know nothing of such good karma. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have not done a single thing by being clever.

I have no deep understanding, no sharp mind, no store of wisdom.

I have not practiced chanting, deep meditation, gentle ways or right living.

I know nothing about good karma at all.

You can come to the One with nothing in your hands — that is enough.
The deeper layer

Coming with empty hands is nimrataa — humility. The list of things not done (jaap taap seel dharam — chanting, deep meditation, gentleness, right living) is honest emptiness, not self-condemnation: the devotee stops keeping score of accomplishments.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can offer just by showing up, with nothing to prove?
