A Treasure Found by Grace

naanak paa-i-aa ayhu niDhaan.
Nanak has obtained this treasure,
haray har nirmal naam.
the immaculate Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
jo japai tis kee gat ho-ay.
Whoever chants it, is emancipated.
naanak karam paraapat ho-ay. ||4||29||40||
It is obtained only by His Grace. ||4||29||40||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: I have found this treasure —

the clean, pure Name of the One, *Har, Har*.

Whoever repeats it is set free.

It comes, Nanak, only by grace.

The greatest treasures are received as gifts, not earned as wages.
The deeper layer

Naanak paa-i-aa ayhu nidhaan — the treasure found. Jo japai tis kee gat ho-ay: whoever remembers is freed (given gat, release/high state). Karam paraapat ho-ay: it is received by grace — the treasure is a gift, not a wage.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift you were given that you could never have earned?
