The Work Worth Doing

ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਣ ਹੋਵੀਜੈ ॥
sarab kee rayn hoveejai.
Be the dust of all men's feet.
ਆਪੁ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
aap mitaa-ay mileejai.
Eradicate self-conceit, and merge in the Lord.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
an-din Dhi-aa-ee-ai naam.
Night and day, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਫਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ॥੪॥੩੩॥੪੪॥
safal naanak ih kaam. ||4||33||44||
O Nanak, this is the most rewarding activity. ||4||33||44||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Become as humble as the dust beneath everyone's feet.

Let the puffed-up self dissolve, and merge into the One.

Night and day, keep the Name in mind.

Nanak says: this is the work most worth doing.

The work most worth doing is quiet: humility and steady remembrance.
The deeper layer

Sarab kee rayn hoveejai — be the dust of all, an image of deep humility that lifts everyone above you rather than below. Aap mitaa-ay mileejai: erase the ego-self and merge. Safal ih kaam: the one rewarding work — remembrance woven through day and night.

A Question to Sit With

What is a quiet, humble kind of work that you think matters a lot?
