In plain words

The One is the doer, the cause behind all causes, generous beyond measure.

The merciful One cares for every single being.

It is unseen and without any limit.

The One is great, and beyond all counting.

The names may differ, but the bountiful, merciful One is the same One.
The deeper layer

The One has many names, and each is spoken here with full reverence: kareem (bountiful), raheem (merciful), alah (Allah), khudaa (God). They come from Muslim devotion, and they reach for the same One the whole of Gurbani sings.

This shabad weaves together the sacred names of Muslim and Hindu devotion, and it opens with these four.

A Question to Sit With

What are some different names people you know use for the same big idea?
