In plain words

Float a lamp like this on the water.

By this lamp, you come to understand everything.

Light an inner lamp that even water cannot put out.
The deeper layer

Light a lamp of awareness that can float on water without going out.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center that the whole shabad turns around.

Aisaa deevaa neer taraa-ay means "float such a lamp on the water." An ordinary candle goes out the moment it touches water. But this lamp is the light of awareness inside you. It keeps shining even when the world around you feels like a flood of noise, busyness and worry.

Jit deevai sabh sojhee paa-ay means "by this lamp, you understand everything." It is like a flashlight that still works in a storm. When everything else goes dark, you can still see where you are going.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of understanding stays with you even in hard times?
