A Steady Hand on Your Head

jis kai mastak haath gur Dharai.
The Guru places His hand upon whos forehead,
so daas adaysaa kaahay karai.
why should that slave of Him feel any anxiety?.
janam maran kee chookee kaan.
The fear of birth and death is dispelled;
pooray gur oopar kurbaan. ||2||
I am a sacrifice to the Perfect Guru. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the Guru lays a steady hand on your forehead,

why should you, the Guru's servant, worry about anything?

The fear of being born and of dying is gone.

I give my whole self, gladly, to the perfect Guru.

A steady, caring hand can quiet a whole storm of worry.
The deeper layer

Jis kai mastak haath gur dharai — the Guru's hand on the forehead is the tradition's image of blessing and protection. Under that hand, adaysaa (anxiety) has no room to grow, and janam maran kee kaan — the nagging fear of endings and beginnings — simply eases.

A Question to Sit With

Whose steady presence makes your worries feel smaller?
