Even at the Very Last Moment

ਅਜਾਮਲ ਕਉ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਸੁਧਿ ਆਈ ॥
ajaamal ka-o ant kaal meh naaraa-in suDh aa-ee.
At the very last moment, Ajaamal became aware of the Lord;
ਜਾਂ ਗਤਿ ਕਉ ਜੋਗੀਸੁਰ ਬਾਛਤ ਸੋ ਗਤਿ ਛਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
jaaN gat ka-o jogeesur baachhat so gat chhin meh paa-ee. ||2||
that state which even the supreme Yogis desire - he attained that state in an instant. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

At the very last moment of his life, Ajaamal remembered the One.

The state that even the greatest yogis long for, he reached in an instant.

*Remembering the One, even at the very last moment, opens the way.*
The deeper layer

Even at the very last moment, remembering the One was enough. Jaa gat ka-o jogeesur baachhat: the state even the greatest yogis long for arrived chhin meh, in an instant.

Ajaamal comes from an old Puranic (ancient Hindu) story about a man who lived recklessly and, at his final moment, called out the divine Name. The Ninth Master tells it to show that the door stays open.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you thought you were too late to start? What would it feel like to begin anyway?
