What is that Name, by which the world, contemplating it, might attain the state of Nirvaanaa? ||1||

In plain words

My mind is tangled up in *maya* — all the shiny, shifting stuff of the world that pulls at us — and it knows nothing at all of wisdom.

So tell me plainly: what is that Name a whole world could hold in mind and find its way to freedom?

*Even a tangled mind can ask the one question that matters.*
The deeper layer

Saying honestly "my mind is tangled" is where it starts; then you ask for the Naam that sets people free.

Man maa-i-aa meh urajh rahi-o hai — my mind is tangled in Maya. Maya is the shiny, ever-changing surface of the world that grabs our attention. Boojhai nah kachh gi-aanaa — it understands nothing of spiritual wisdom. Gi-aanaa means true understanding.

So the seeker asks for the one thing worth knowing. Ka-un naam jag jaa kai simrai — what is that Name the whole world can remember? Paavai pad nirbaanaa — and so reach nirbaan, the free and open state. Think of a kite string in a big knot. The first step is to say, "This is tangled. Please help." Saying "I don't know" honestly is itself the opening.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you would ask if you could get a completely honest answer?
