To Sing His Praise Is Every Prayer

ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਤਬ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਬਤਾਈ ॥
bha-ay da-i-aal kirpaal sant jan tab ih baat bataa-ee.
When the Saints became kind and compassionate, they told me this.
ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਮਾਨੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੀਏ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥
sarab Dharam maano tih kee-ay jih parabh keerat gaa-ee. ||2||
Understand, that whoever sings the Kirtan of God's Praises, has performed all religious rituals. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the saints became kind and gentle to me, they told me this:

Know that whoever sings the praise of the One has done every duty and every rite there is.

*A heart singing the One has already offered every prayer.*
The deeper layer

Singing the One's praise with a full heart holds every religious duty in it.

Bha-ay da-i-aal kirpaal sant jan — the sant jan, gentle and awake people, became kind to me. Tab ih baat bataa-ee — then they told me this.

Sarab Dharam maano tih kee-ay — know that this person has done every religious duty. Dharam here means duty and ritual. Jih parabh keerat gaa-ee — whoever sings keerat, the praises of God. Guru Tegh Bahadur, the Ninth Guru, gathers all the ceremonies into one living act: praise from the heart.

Think of a family meal. There can be many dishes, but the love that cooked them is what matters most. This speaks to empty show in any tradition, and to no one people.

A Question to Sit With

What matters more — doing something perfectly, or doing it with your whole heart?
