Praise Becomes the Good Deed

ਕਲਿ ਕਲਵਾਲੀ ਸਰਾ ਨਿਬੇੜੀ ਕਾਜੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੋਆ ॥
kal kalvaalee saraa nibayrhee kaajee krisanaa ho-aa.
In this turbulent age of Kali Yuga, Muslim law decides the cases, and the blue-robed Qazi is the judge.
ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬੇਦੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਲਹਿਆ ॥੫॥
banee barahmaa bayd atharban karnee keerat lahi-aa. ||5||
The Guru's Bani has taken the place of Brahma's Veda, and the singing of the Lord's Praises are good deeds. ||5||

In plain words

In this churning time, the cases are settled by Islamic law, and the Qazi in his blue robe is the judge.

The Guru's living Word has taken the place of Brahma's Veda. Singing the One's praises is the good deed.

*The most sacred act has become the simplest one — singing the One with love.*
The deeper layer

The times are what they are, and singing the One's praises is itself the good deed.

In his day, the courts were run under Muslim law. The kaajee, the Qazi or judge, decided the cases. Guru Nanak simply describes how things were in kal, the confused age.

Then comes the hopeful turn. Banee, the Guru's living Word, now stands where the Atharva Veda, one of the old Hindu holy books, once stood. And keerat, singing the One's praises, is itself the good deed.

He is not attacking Islam or Hinduism. He is moving the sacred from old habits to living love, open to anyone. The most sacred thing has become the simplest thing. It is like a family discovering that the best part of a holiday is not the expensive gift. It is singing together.

A Question to Sit With

What is something simple and good that anyone can do, no matter who they are?
