Songs Without Seeing Yourself

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੀਤ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਆਪੁ ॥
gaavahi geet na cheeneh aap.
You sing the songs, but you do not understand your own self.
ਕਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥
ki-o laagee nivrai partaap.
How will the burning pain within be relieved?
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਚੈ ਮਨ ਭਾਇ ॥
gur kai sabad rachai man bhaa-ay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, let your mind be absorbed in the Lord's Love,
ਭਿਖਿਆ ਸਹਜ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
bhikhi-aa sahj veechaaree khaa-ay. ||2||
and you will intuitively experience the charity of contemplation. ||2||

In plain words

You sing the holy songs, but you do not know your own self.

How will the burning pain inside ever cool down?

Let your mind soak in the Guru's Word with love, and calm, deep thought becomes the food you are given.

*Songs mean little until you also look honestly at yourself.*
The deeper layer

Singing holy songs helps most when you also look honestly at yourself.

Gaavahi geet na cheeneh aap means "you sing songs but do not know your own self." Then how will the partaap, the burning restlessness inside, ever cool down?

The answer comes next. Gur kai sabad rachai man bhaa-ay means "let your mind soak in the Guru's Word with love." Sabad (Shabad) is the Guru's Word. Then bhikhi-aa sahj veechaaree khaa-ay: you get to eat the calm food of thinking deeply.

Think of singing along to a song you have heard a hundred times without noticing the words. One day you listen closely, and it changes how you feel. Singing is not the problem. Singing with love and attention is exactly what heals.

A Question to Sit With

It's easy to say the right words. What is harder, and more useful, about looking honestly at yourself?
