No Fear Can Touch This Heart

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa rog na laagai.
The diseases of egotism and possessiveness do not afflict
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
raam bhagat jam kaa bha-o bhaagai.
one who worships the Lord. Fear of the Messenger of Death runs away.
ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
jam jandaar na laagai mohi.
The Messenger of Death, the enemy of the soul, does not touch me at all.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਹਿ ॥੩॥
nirmal naam ridai har sohi. ||3||
The Immaculate Name of the Lord illuminates my heart. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The sicknesses of ego and me-mine do not touch the one who loves the One. The fear of death runs away.

Death's messenger, the enemy of the soul, cannot lay a hand on me.

The pure Naam of the One shines bright in my heart.

*A heart bright with the Naam has nothing left to fear.*
The deeper layer

Love for the One heals ego and me-mine, and the fear of death runs off.

Ha-umai mamtaa rog calls ego and the wish to own things rog, sicknesses. A sickness is something to heal, so this is a healing picture. Jam kaa bha-o bhaagai means the fear of death runs away. The jam, death's messenger, is an old picture of the fear of dying. With the pure Naam shining in the heart, there is nothing left to dread.

A Question to Sit With
