Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 84
Verse 7 of 9

The World Is Asleep

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥
gurmukh jaag rahay a-uDhootaa.
As Gurmukh, I remain awake and aware, unattached.
ਸਦ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਤਤੁ ਪਰੋਤਾ ॥
sad bairaagee tat parotaa.
Forever detached, I am woven into the essence of reality.
ਜਗੁ ਸੂਤਾ ਮਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
jag sootaa mar aavai jaa-ay.
The world is asleep; it dies, and comes and goes in reincarnation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥
bin gur sabad na sojhee paa-ay. ||6||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, it does not understand. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Facing the Guru, I stay awake and unattached.

Always free of clinging, I am woven into the heart of what is true.

The world is asleep. It dies, and it comes and goes, round and round. Without the Guru's Word, it does not understand.

*The world sleeps; the Guru's Word wakes the heart.*
The deeper layer

The world sleeps, and the Guru's Word wakes the heart.

Gurmukh jaag rahay means the one who faces the Guru stays awake. Tat parotaa means woven into the heart of everything, like a bead on a thread. Jag sootaa mar aavai jaa-ay means the sleeping world dies and comes and goes, round and round, like someone on autopilot who never looks up. Bin gur sabad na sojhee means that without the Guru's Word there is no understanding.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to go through your day “awake” instead of just on autopilot?
