Verse 5 of 10

The One in Every Heart

ਵਾਚੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
vaachai vaad na bayd beechaarai.
You study the arguments, but do not contemplate the Vedas.
ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
aap dubai ki-o pitraa taarai.
You drown yourself - how will you save your ancestors?
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ghat ghat barahm cheenai jan ko-ay.
How rare is that person who realizes that God is in each and every heart.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
satgur milai ta sojhee ho-ay. ||4||
When one meets the True Guru, then he understands. ||4||

In plain words

You read the arguments, but you do not think deeply about the Vedas.

You are drowning yourself, so how will you carry your ancestors across?

Rare is the person who sees that the One lives inside every single heart. When you meet the True Guru, you understand.

*The same One lives in every single heart.*
The deeper layer

Clever arguments are not the same as wisdom. Wisdom sees the One in every heart.

Vaachai vaad na bayd beechaarai means "you read the arguments, but you do not think deeply about the Vedas." The Vedas are the ancient holy books of India.

Aap dubai ki-o pitraa taarai means "if you are drowning yourself, how can you save your ancestors?" Think of a lifeguard who cannot swim. They cannot help anyone else until they learn to stay afloat themselves.

Then the bright center: ghat ghat barahm cheenai jan ko-ay, "rare is the one who sees the One in every heart." Barahm (Brahm) is a name for the One. The same Light lives in every single person, so everyone is equal. Satgur milai ta sojhee ho-ay: this understanding comes when you meet the True Guru.

A Question to Sit With

If the same spark were inside every person you meet, how would that change how you treat even a stranger?
