Counting Brings Worry

ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੀਐ ॥

Seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru, peace is found.
ਕਰਿ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਮ ਆਇਆ ॥

I sinned and made mistakes, but now I seek Your Sanctuary.
ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੇ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
gur har bhaytay purab kamaa-i-aa. ||5||
The Guru led me to meet the Lord, according to my past actions. ||5||

In plain words

When you keep counting and calculating, doubt and pain fill the heart.

Step into the Guru's shelter, and peace comes.

I did wrong and made mistakes, and now I have come to Your shelter. The Guru led me to meet the One, as my past deeds had prepared.

*Bring your mistakes into the Guru's shelter, and peace comes.*
The deeper layer

Endless counting fills the heart with worry, and the Guru's shelter brings peace.

Ganat ganee-ai sahsaa dukh jee-ai means "counting and calculating, doubt and pain fill the heart." Think of checking your points in a game over and over. The more you count, the more anxious you get.

Gur kee saran pavai sukh thee-ai means "entering the Guru's shelter, peace comes." Saran is a safe shelter.

Kar apraadh saran ham aa-i-aa means "I made mistakes, and I came to Your shelter." The door is open to people who are not perfect. Owning your mistakes is honest, and you are welcomed, not turned away. Purab kamaa-i-aa means "what was earned before": the Guru led the speaker to the One, as earlier deeds had prepared the way.

A Question to Sit With

When you've messed up, is it easier to hide it or to bring it into the open? What does the open way make possible?
