Verse 8 of 10

Rare Is the One Who Leans on the Name

ਇਕਿ ਪਾਧੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮਿਸਰ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik paaDhay pandit misar kahaaveh.
Some call themselves Pandits, religious scholars and spiritual teachers.
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
dubiDhaa raatay mahal na paavahi.
Tinged with double-mindedness, they do not find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
jis gur parsaadee naam aDhaar.
One who takes the Support of the Naam, by Guru's Grace,
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਆਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
kot maDhay ko jan aapaar. ||7||
is a rare person, one among millions, incomparable. ||7||

In plain words

Some call themselves pandits, scholars and teachers.

But colored by being split two ways, they do not reach the palace where the One is present.

The one who, by the Guru's grace, leans on the Naam is rare, one among millions, beyond compare.

*Leaning on the Naam opens the door that titles cannot.*
The deeper layer

Big titles do not open the door to the One. Leaning on the Naam does.

Paadhay, pandit, misar are all titles for learned teachers and scholars. But those who are dubidhaa raatay, split two ways in the heart, do not reach the mahal. The mahal is the palace, the inner home where the One is present.

Think of a school badge that says "Hall Monitor." The badge does not make someone kind or wise. What they do does.

Jis gur parsaadee naam adhaar means "the one who, by the Guru's grace, leans on the Name." Adhaar means support. Such a person is kot madhay ko jan aapaar: one in millions, beyond compare. It is a gift received through grace, not something won by rank or learning.

A Question to Sit With

Why might a fancy title or lots of knowledge still leave a person's heart unsettled?
