The One True in Everyone

ਏਕੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਏਕੈ ॥
ayk buraa bhalaa sach aykai.
One is bad, and another good, but the One True Lord is contained in all.
ਬੂਝੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
boojh gi-aanee satgur kee taykai.
Understand this, O spiritual teacher, through the support of the True Guru:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
gurmukh virlee ayko jaani-aa.
rare indeed is that Gurmukh, who realizes the One Lord.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥੮॥
aavan jaanaa mayt samaani-aa. ||8||
His comings and goings cease, and he merges in the Lord. ||8||

In plain words

One person is called bad, and another good, but the One True Lord is in them all.

Understand this, wise teacher, leaning on the True Guru.

Rare is the one turned toward the Guru who comes to know the One.

That one's coming and going ends, and they melt into the One.

*Beneath our labels of good and bad, one Oneness lives in everyone.*
The deeper layer

The same One lives in everyone, whether we call them good or bad.

Ayk buraa bhalaa sach aykai means "one is bad, one is good, but the One Truth is in all." Think of a class where kids get labeled "the troublemaker" or "the good kid." Underneath the labels, the same Light is in every one of them.

Boojh gi-aanee satgur kee taykai means "understand this, wise one, leaning on the True Guru." Gi-aanee means a wise or learned person.

A gurmukh is someone turned toward the Guru. The rare gurmukh who knows the One finds that aavan jaanaa, the coming and going, stops. Such a person samaani-aa, melts into the One, like a drop of water joining the ocean. Seeing everyone as equal and becoming one with the One are the same teaching.

A Question to Sit With

You quickly label people “good” or “bad.” What might shift if you remembered the same spark is in each of them?
