The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot touch you, and the serpent of Maya cannot sting you, when you drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Serve the Guru, my mind, and stay in the Sangat of the One's humble people.

Drink in the sweet taste of the One, and death's harsh messenger cannot touch you, and the snake of Maya, the world's pull, cannot bite you.

Serve the Guru and stay in the Sangat, and fear and wanting cannot bite.
The deeper layer

Serve the Guru and stay in the Sangat; then death's messenger and the snake of wanting cannot touch you.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line at the center of the shabad. The Sangat is people gathered together to remember the One. Jam jandaar is the harsh messenger of death, an old picture of the fear of dying. Sarpan is the snake of Maya, the bite of grabbing and wanting. Both lose their power when you drink in har kaa ras, the sweet taste of the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company steadies you and quiets your worries?
