ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
vaad parhai raagee jag bheejai.
The world reads the arguments, and is softened only by music.

In the three modes and corruption, they are born and die.

Without the Lord's Name, they endure suffering and pain. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The world reads to argue, and is moved only by music.
Caught in the three pulls and in poison, people are born and die.
Without the Naam, they carry pain and sorrow.
Cleverness and entertainment can fill your time without ever settling your heart.
Debate and music cannot, by themselves, settle the heart. The Naam can.
Vaad parhai means reading only to argue. Raagee jag bheejai means the world is moved only by music. Tarai gun are the three qualities, restless striving, laziness and goodness, that keep the mind churning. Debate and music are not bad. They just cannot do the settling.
