Breath Without the Name

ਚਾੜਸਿ ਪਵਨੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
chaarhas pavan singhaasan bheejai.
The Yogi draws the breath upwards, and opens the Tenth Gate.
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
ni-ulee karam khat karam kareejai.
He practices inner cleansing and the six rituals of purification.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin birthaa saas leejai. ||3||
But without the Lord's Name, the breath he draws is useless. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The yogi draws the breath upward and opens the Tenth Gate.

He does the inner cleansing and the six purifications.

But without the Naam, the breath he draws is wasted.

A perfect technique with an empty heart is still empty.
The deeper layer

Every breathing practice is empty without the Naam.

The yogis' own practices are named with respect: drawing the breath upward; the dasam duaar, the "Tenth Gate" yogis seek at the top of the head; niuli karam, an inner cleansing; and the khat karam, six purifications. None of them is laughed at. Without the living Naam, though, the breath is birthaa, wasted.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of something done perfectly on the outside but hollow on the inside?
