Clean Water Cannot Wash a Cloudy Mind

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮੀਜੈ ॥
antar mail tirath bharmeejai.
With filth within, he wanders around at places of pilgrimage.
ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਚ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
man nahee soochaa ki-aa soch kareejai.
His mind is not pure, so what is the use of performing ritual cleansings?
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
kirat pa-i-aa dos kaa ka-o deejai. ||5||
He carries the karma of his own past actions; who else can he blame? ||5||

In plain words

With dirt inside, a person wanders from one holy river to the next.

If the mind is not clean, what good is all the ritual washing?

You carry what your own past actions have set going. Who else can you blame?

Traveling to a holy place changes nothing if you bring the same cloudy heart along.
The deeper layer

A holy river cannot wash a cloudy mind, and what we carry comes from our own actions.

Antar mail means dirt inside. A tirath is a place of pilgrimage, often a holy river. The aim is washing without a clean heart, never pilgrims who travel with love. Kirat pa-i-aa is what our own past actions have set in motion, our karma. Dos kaa ka-o deejai asks: whom can you blame? The question points inward. Change begins inside, not at a far-off shrine.

A Question to Sit With

When something goes wrong, what does it look like to start the fixing inside yourself?
