Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As you came, so you will go, foolish friend. Just as surely as you were born, one day you will die.

As much as you chase pleasures, that much pain comes to you. Forgetting the Naam, you fall into the wild, frightening ocean of the world.

Everything here is passing through, and so are you — so hold it lightly.
The deeper layer

Life has a beginning and an end, and remembering that helps us hold things lightly.

Ji-o aa-i-aa ti-o jaaveh — as you came, so you go. Ba-uray means foolish or confused one, the way a friend might say, "Hey, wake up." Everyone who is born dies one day. Saying it plainly is not meant to frighten. It is meant to loosen our grip.

Ras bhog are pleasures. The more we chase them, the more pain follows, the way too much candy ends in a stomach ache. Bhavjal is the world-ocean, wide and churning. Forgetting the Naam is like swimming out into it with nothing to hold on to.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you hold tightly that you might hold more lightly?
