Your love for gold and sexual pleasures increases; why have you forgotten the Naam, and why do you wander in doubt? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Looking at your body and your wealth, you swell with pride.

Your love for gold and pleasure keeps growing. Why have you forgotten the Naam? Why do you wander, lost in doubt?

Being proud of what you cannot keep leaves the heart unsure and restless.
The deeper layer

Pride in what we cannot keep pushes the Naam out of the heart.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Tan Dhan means body and wealth, and garab is pride. Think of someone who checks the mirror all day, or counts their things again and again. Kanik kaamnee means gold and the pull of pleasure. As love for these grows, the Naam gets crowded out, and the mind falls into bharam, wandering doubt, unsure where to turn. The question is gentle and direct: why forget the Naam?

A Question to Sit With

What do you feel proud of that will not last forever?
