A Heart Without Kindness

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ ॥

Day and night, you jealously slander others; in your heart, you have neither the Naam, nor compassion for all.

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you will not find salvation or honor. Without the Lord's Name, you shall go to hell. ||4||

In plain words

Day and night you talk badly about others and burn with envy. In your heart there is no Naam and no kindness for all.

Without the Guru's Word, you find no freedom and no honor. Without the Naam of the One, you fall into a place of great suffering.

A heart full of resentment has no room left for kindness.
The deeper layer

Talking badly about others, day and night, leaves no room in the heart for the Naam or for kindness.

Nindaa taat paraa-ee means slandering others and burning with envy of them. Sarab da-i-aa means kindness toward everyone, and a heart busy with envy has no space for it. Think of a backpack stuffed with rocks: there is no room left for lunch.

Gat pat means freedom and honor, and they come through the Guru's Word. Narak, often translated "hell," is a place of great suffering; here it is where a life of envy and slander leads.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a resentment you could set down to make room for kindness?
