Here Today, Anxious Tomorrow

ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
sukh sampat ka-o aavat daykhai saakat man abhimaan bha-i-aa.
Seeing peace and wealth come to him, the faithless cynic become proud in his mind.
jis kaa ih tan Dhan so fir layvai antar sahsaa dookh pa-i-aa. ||7||
But He who owns this body and wealth, takes them back again, and then the mortal feels anxiety and pain deep within. ||7||

In plain words

When comfort and wealth come his way, the one cut off from the One grows proud inside.

But the One who owns this body and this wealth takes them back again, and then worry and pain fill him deep inside.

What was only lent to you can be taken back, so lean on the Giver, not the gift.
The deeper layer

What we have is on loan, and pride in it turns to worry when it goes.

A saakat is someone cut off from the Source. When good fortune comes, he grows abhimaan, proud, as if he made it all himself. Jis kaa ih tan Dhan — the body and wealth belong to the One, and the One takes them back. Then sahsaa, anxiety, rises up inside. It is like bragging about a borrowed bike and then panicking when its owner asks for it back. Holding gifts loosely, and the Giver close, keeps that worry away.

A Question to Sit With

What have you been given that it helps to remember was a gift?
