You suffer great pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be rid of this disease. ||6||

In plain words

You do many wrong things and put on big shows, but without awareness of the Word, you fall into confusion.

The sickness of ego brings you great pain. Take the Guru's teaching, and that sickness is gone.

Ego is a sickness, and the Guru's teaching is the medicine.
The deeper layer

Ego is a sickness, and the Guru's teaching is its medicine.

Karahi bikaar vithaar ghanayray — doing wrong and making a big display of it. Without surat sabad, awareness of the Word, the mind falls into bharam, confusion. Ha-umai rog is the sickness of ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self, "me first"). It brings mahaa dukh, great pain.

The cure comes in the same breath: gurmat layvhu rog ga-i-aa — take the Guru's teaching, and the sickness is gone. Think of a fever: it is miserable while it lasts, and there is medicine for it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the heavy, self-centered feeling lift when it settles on you?
