Abstinence, chastity, self-control and truthfulness have been implanted within me; I am imbued with the sublime essence of the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||

In plain words

Self-restraint, purity, self-control, and truth have been planted deep in me.

I am soaked in the sweetness of the True Word.

The good qualities you long for can be planted in you, not forced into you.
The deeper layer

Good habits can grow from the inside, like seeds.

The heading says Raamkalee Dakhanee. Dakhanee means "southern." Guru Nanak traveled far, and here he sings in a southern style of speech he met on his journeys. It is the same Guru Nanak, in a different local voice.

Jat sat sanjam saach — holding back, staying pure, self-control, and truth. Many seekers, yogis among them, worked very hard for these, often through strict rules.

Guru Nanak says something gentler. These good ways are drirh-aa-i-aa — planted firmly inside. And what planted them? The saach sabad, the True Word.

Think of a garden. You cannot pull a flower up to make it grow faster. You plant the seed and water it. The True Word is like that water. The good habits grow on their own.

A Question to Sit With

What good quality would you love to see take root inside you?
