Verse 10 of 11

The Music in Every Heart

ਮੋਹਿ ਗਇਆ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਵਾਈ ॥੯॥
mohi ga-i-aa bairaagee jogee ghat ghat kinguree vaa-ee. ||9||
The Guru, the detached Yogi, has enticed the hearts of all; He plays His harp in each and every heart. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru, free and unattached, the true yogi, has won every heart.

In each and every heart, he plays a quiet harp.

There is a quiet music already playing in every single heart.
The deeper layer

A quiet music plays inside every single heart.

Bairaagee jogee — the free, unattached one, the true yogi. The verse is speaking of the Guru. A bairaagee is someone who does not cling to things.

Ghat ghat kinguree vaa-ee — in each and every heart, he plays the kinguree. A kinguree is a string instrument that yogis carried, a bit like a small harp.

Here the instrument moves inside. The awake one does not bring the music from outside. He wakes up a music already there in everyone.

Think of a room full of guitars. Pluck one string, and the same string on the other guitars starts to hum too. Every heart has that string. No one is left out.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt a quiet joy playing inside you for no clear reason?
