ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੇਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਧਾਰੀ ਸੰਤਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh kaytee sabad uDhaaree santahu. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the Word of the Shabad, the Gurmukhs have saved so very many, O Saints. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O saints, those turned toward the Guru have carried so many to safety through the Word.
The right words, taken to heart, have quietly rescued more people than you know.
The Word is what carries people to safety, and those turned toward the Guru pass it on to many others.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. It speaks to santahu, O saints, O seekers. Gurmukh kaytee sabad uDhaaree — the gurmukhs (those whose faces are turned toward the Guru) have lifted up so many through the sabad, the Word. All the yogi's tools in the other lines point back here: the Word, more than any technique, is what saves.
