Three Names, One Maker

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸ ਇਕ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥੧੨॥
barahmaa bisan mahays ik moorat aapay kartaa kaaree. ||12||
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are manifestations of the One God. He Himself is the Doer of deeds. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are all faces of the one Maker,

who alone does all that is done.

The many names people give the divine can all point to one reality.
The deeper layer

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are all faces of the one Maker.

Barahmaa bisan mahays ik moorat — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are forms of the One. In Hindu tradition, Brahma creates, Vishnu keeps the world going, and Shiva brings things to an end. Aapay kartaa kaaree — the One alone is the Doer of all deeds.

Guru Nanak speaks of these gods with full respect. He does not set them up as rivals. He sees them as faces of one Reality. Think of one person who is a parent at home, a teacher at school and a coach on weekends. Many roles, one person.

A Question to Sit With

Why might different people give the same one thing many different names?
