Cross the Ocean by Knowing the Soul

ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਧਿ ਤਰੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਆਤਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੧੩॥
kaa-i-aa soDh tarai bhav saagar aatam tat veechaaree. ||13||
One who purifies his body, crosses over the terrifying world-ocean; he contemplates the essence of his own soul. ||13||

In plain words

Whoever makes the body clean and calm crosses the rough sea of the world.

They think deeply about the very heart of their own soul.

Knowing your own heart deeply is a kind of quiet strength.
The deeper layer

The way across life's rough sea is to come to know your own soul.

Kaa-i-aa soDh tarai bhav saagar — whoever makes the body clean crosses the scary sea of the world. Kaa-i-aa is the body. Bhav saagar is the world-ocean, a picture of life's storms and troubles. Aatam tat veechaaree — they think about the tat, the true heart, of their own soul.

The crossing is made by knowing yourself deeply, more than by any outer ceremony. Think of a swimmer who stops thrashing and learns how the water works. Then the water holds them up. Knowing your own depth is what carries you over.

A Question to Sit With

What is one true thing you have learned about your own heart?
