The Giver Draws You In

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੧੫॥
aapay mayl la-ay gundaataa ha-umai tarisnaa maaree. ||15||
The Giver of virtue unites with Himself, one who conquers egotism and desire. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Giver of all good things draws to Himself

the one who has tamed pride and the thirst for more.

When you set down ego and endless wanting, you are quietly drawn closer.
The deeper layer

The One is the one who does the joining.

Aapay mayl la-ay gundaataa — the Giver of all good qualities joins a person to Himself. Gundaataa means the Giver of virtue. Ha-umai tarisnaa maaree — this happens for someone who has overcome ego and craving. Ha-umai is the "me first" feeling. Tarisnaa is thirst, the craving for more.

Our part is to clear what blocks the way. The Giver does the joining. Think of opening a window. You cannot make the sunshine. But once the window is open, the sun comes in all by itself. That is grace.

A Question to Sit With

What thirsty wanting might you set down to feel more connected?
