Eradicating the three qualities, dwell in the fourth state. This is the unparalleled devotional worship. ||16||

In plain words

Wiping away the three usual pulls, the heart lives in a fourth, freer place,

and this is a love for the One like no other.

There is a deep freedom on the far side of being pulled this way and that.
The deeper layer

Past the three usual pulls of the mind, there is a fourth, freer place.

Tarai gun maytay — wiping away the three qualities. Old Indian teaching says three gun, or qualities, spin the ordinary mind. One is restless drive. One is heaviness and dullness. One is goodness and calm. Cha-uthai vartai — the seeker lives in the fourth state, beyond all three.

Ayhaa bhagat niraaree — this is devotion like no other. Bhagat means loving devotion. Here even "being good" is not the last step. Think of a kite. Gusts push it one way, then another. But above the gusts there is a steady sky where it just floats. That steady sky is the fourth state, a heart simply in tune with the One.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to not be tugged around by every mood?
