A Hero Through Every Age

ਸਬਦਿ ਸੂਰ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਅਉਧੂ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੨੩॥
sabad soor jug chaaray a-oDhoo banee bhagat veechaaree. ||23||
Contemplating the Shabad, you shall be a hero throughout the four ages, O hermit; contemplate the Word of the Guru's Bani in devotion. ||23||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Think on the Word and you become a hero for all time, O hermit;

think on the Guru's Word with love.

Courage is a steady heart, and it never goes out of style.
The deeper layer

The bravest person is the one whose heart is anchored in the Word.

Sabad soor jug chaaray a-oDhoo — through the Word, O hermit, you become a hero in all four ages. A soor is a hero. The four ages are an old way of saying all of time.

Banee bhagat veechaaree — think about the banee, the Guru's sacred Word, with love. The bravest person is not always the loudest fighter. It is the one whose heart holds steady. Think of a lighthouse in a storm. It does not chase the waves. It just stands and shines. That kind of courage lasts through every age.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you know whose quiet steadiness looks like courage?
