Carried Across, and Your Family Too

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਧੂ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੈ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੨੨॥
maa-i-aa moh bhavjal hai avDhoo sabad tarai kul taaree. ||22||
Attachment to Maya is the terrifying world-ocean; through the Shabad, the true hermit saves himself, and his ancestors as well. ||22||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Clinging to the passing world is a rough, wild sea, O seeker.

The true hermit crosses it by the Word, and carries his family across too, even those who came before.

When one person crosses by the Word, the whole family is lifted too.
The deeper layer

When one person crosses life's sea through the Word, their family is lifted too.

Maa-i-aa moh bhavjal hai — attachment to Maya is the scary world-ocean. Maya is the shiny, passing show of the world. Moh is clinging to it. Bhavjal is the rough sea of life.

Sabad tarai kul taaree — through the Word, the seeker crosses, and carries the kul, the whole family, across too, even those who came before. Waking up is never only private. Think of one calm person in a busy kitchen. Soon everyone else slows down and breathes. One steady heart can lift a whole family.

A Question to Sit With

How might your own steadiness help the people closest to you?
