He Himself forgives, and unites in His Union; Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||25||9||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One forgives, and draws us close to Himself;
Nanak says: I come to You for shelter.
After all the effort, the last word is kindness: you are forgiven and welcomed.
At the very end, the One forgives and brings us home.
Aapay bakhsay mayl milaa-ay — the One forgives, and joins us to Himself. This comes from grace, the One's free gift. We do not earn it.
Naanak saran tumaaree — Nanak asks only for Your shelter. This long shabad has spent many lines on the inner meaning of yoga. Its last word is the simplest one. Think of a child coming home after a long day. They do not give a speech. They just run into a hug. Forgiveness, and shelter received, is where the whole song ends.
A Question to Sit With
What does it feel like to be forgiven and simply welcomed home?
